The issue is more fundamental than the operating system and firmware, and it stems from the very design of the third generation router’s Wi-Fi network protocol. Most third generation routers are based on the IEEE 802.11n Wi-Fi protocol, which was developed by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) in collaboration with the wireless industry. One of the protocols’ primary goals was to maintain radio connections through a diverse network of devices. It allows wireless routers to communicate with other routers on the network, as well as with mobile devices. The IEEE 802.11n protocol divides the network into channels or wavelengths of a specific bandwidth, which are used for different communication purposes. According to the protocol, devices on the same channel can communicate with one another, and the channels are separated by 40MHz. Thus, each router has its own set of seven channels for communication. The problem is that the receiver in the router identifies only a single channel, or a single pair of channels as a communication pair.
